This trompe l’oeil oil painting is dedicated to the memory of early pioneers of Deadwood, South Dakota. The title, “Aces & Eights” aka “The Dead Man’s Hand”, refers to the unlucky hand of cards held by James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickock when he was assassinated by the coward Jack McCall, in the No. 10 Saloon at Deadwood, D.T., August 2, 1876. “Good-bye Old Pard. Until we meet again in that Happy Hunting Ground.” – Colorado Charlie Utter.
